Louis Cruz Torres was born on April 25, 1923, shortly after his parents entered the U.S. from Guadalajara, Mexico. The family worked in the fields in Texas, California, and Kansas, where Louis got his early schooling. He married Dora Alvidrez at nineteen because he was expecting to go into the military, and he was drafted in February 1943. He served in the Army Air Corps and was stationed in England.
